Rules for Karate Kata: Shobu-Sanban
- The competition area must be flat and devoid
of hazard.
- The competition area must be of maximum size
to permit the uninterrupted performance of the kata
- There shall be one kata referee and four
kata judges or one flag referee and two flag judges.
- There shall be score-keepers and caller/announcers.
- Each kata official displays their score using
cards or flags.
- When the score keeper summates the scores
for each contestant, the maximum and minimum scores awarded are deleted. In the event of a tie,
the minimum score from the remaining scores will be considered. If the tie persists, then
the maximum score from the remaining scores is considered.
- In the event of a further tie, the contestants may have
to repeat their kata or perform a different kata. If still another tie, a judgement will be made by the officials.
Criteria for a Kata Decision:
|
 |
- Kata must be performed with competence and must demonstrate a clear understanding
of the principles it contains.
- Kata must demonstrate correct focus of attention, use of power, good balance and
proper breathing.
- Kata should not be interrupted, varied or brought to a halt before the ending.
- Stances must be consistent and correct - correct weight distribution, smooth and
even transition between stances, correct tension in stances and feet edges firmly on floor.
- Techniques must demonstrate accuracy, correct kihon, correct tension, focus, kime
and show proper understanding of the kata bunkai-application.

|
 |
6. Kata uniformly demonstrates unwavering
concentration, contrast in tension, breathing and movement, an understanding of the techniques being demonstrated and a realistic,
rather than "theatrical" demonstration of the katas meaning.
7. Unless using the flag system for kata, the
following should be considered when performing a kata using scorecards:
-
momentary hesitation in the smooth performance, quickly remedied - a loss of
0.1 points.
-
momentary but discernible pause, a loss of 0.2 points.
-
a distinct halt, disqualification should result.
-
momentary imbalance, with barely a wobble, quickly remedied, a loss of 0.1 to 0.3
points.
-
actual instabilities where there is a distinct but recoverable loss of balance, a
loss of 0.2 to 0.4 points.
-
a complete loss of balance and/or a fall, a disqualification will result.
